During your interview, an USCIS officer will test your ability to read, write, and speak English, unless you are exempt from the English requirements, based on your age and length of permanent residence. You will also be given civics test to test your knowledge and understanding of U.S. History and Government, unless you are exempt, based on your age and other reasons.

English Exam

Your English will be tested in the following ways:
1. Reading. To test your reading ability you may be asked to:
  • read out loud parts of your application;
  • read a set of civics questions and then answer them; or
  • read several simple sentences out loud.
2. Writing. To test your writing skills, the USCIS officer will ask you to write one or two simple sentences.
3. Speaking. To test your speaking ability, the USCIS officer will ask you questions about yourself and your application during your interview

Citizenship Exam

During your interview, you will be asked to verbally answer a set of civics question or to take a written multiple-choice test with up to 20 questions.

This may be the only exam you take where you receive all the possible questions and answers ahead of time. But having the answers does not mean you are guaranteed to pass. Like any exam, if you fail to prepare, you will flunk. To eliminate this possibility we offer Citizenship Test Study. You will receive it free of charge, along with English Test Study, Sample Interview with the USCIS officer and Interview Tips once you complete your citizenship application with us.

You could pass the Citizenship Exam by simply memorizing the answers to all of the questions but it is best to understand at least a little bit about the background and meaning of all 100 questions, and not just memorize the answers.

English and Citizenship test requirements, based on age and length of permanent residence at the time of filing.

Certain applicants have different English and Citizenship Test requirements, based on their age and time of being a permanent resident. If you are over 50 years of age and have lived in the Unites States as a lawful permanent resident for 20 years, or if you are over 55 years old and have lived in the United States as a lawful permanent resident for at least 15 years, you will not have to take English Language test, but you will have to take Citizenship Test in the language of your choice.

If you are over 65 years of age and have lived in the United States as a lawful permanent resident for more 20 years, you do not have to take the English test, but you have to take a simpler version of the Citizenship Test in the language of your choice.
